Cat Nutrition — Purr-o-Meals | UNDERSTOOD
Cat Nutrition

Your cat is a
desert animal.
In your apartment.

She evolved to never need to drink — water came from prey. You gave her dry food instead. She's been chronically dehydrated for years, and had no way to tell you. Every meal should be moist. FEDIAF complete.

Cat Biology

Four things a cat
biologically requires.

1
Obligate carnivore
Zero carbohydrate requirement. Biologically.
Kibble: typically 25–40% carbohydrate. Cats have no metabolic use for it.

Cats lack the salivary and intestinal amylase to efficiently process starch. Unlike dogs, they cannot regulate blood glucose well when fed high-carb diets. 90% of the diet should come from animal protein and fat.

2
Dietary taurine
Cats cannot synthesise taurine. They must eat it.
Kibble: taurine bioavailability drops above 120°C. Synthetic added back.

Taurine deficiency causes DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy), retinal degeneration, and reproductive failure in cats. It's irreversible once damage begins. Taurine from whole meat at low temperature is not the same as synthetic taurine added post-processing.

3
Moisture in every meal
Cats evolved suppressed thirst drive. Water must come from food.
Kibble: 8% moisture. Prey: 70%. Kidneys compensate indefinitely — until they can't.

Chronic subclinical dehydration shows no symptoms for 6–8 years. Then kidneys. Kidney disease is the #1 cause of feline mortality. Moist food every meal is not a premium choice — it's the biologically correct one.

4
Arachidonic acid
Cats cannot convert linoleic acid to arachidonic acid.
Plant-based fat sources cannot meet this need. Must come from animal fat.

Unlike dogs and humans, cats lack the Δ6 desaturase enzyme needed for this conversion. Arachidonic acid is essential for skin integrity, reproduction, and platelet function. It only exists in animal fat — specifically organ fat and egg yolk.

Cat eating warm moist Purr-o-Meals — the hydration her biology requires
The Hydration Crisis

She's been thirsty
for years.

A cat's body evolved in the Sahara. She was never designed to drink from a bowl. She was designed to get all her water from prey — at 70% moisture. The habit of not drinking is genetically wired. It can't be overcome by putting water next to the bowl.

India-Specific

Indian cats face
specific challenges.

Cat in Indian summer heat — ambient 38°C leaves no thermal buffer
Indian summer. Zero margin.
Ambient 38–42°C · Cat body temp 38.5°C
No thermal buffer. Dry food in Indian summer is a medical problem, not a preference issue. Every meal should be moist from May through September.
Cat kidney disease — the silent cost of chronic dehydration on dry food
The kidney cost.
CKD treatment: ₹8,000–25,000/month
Chronic kidney disease treatment in Indian cats costs ₹8,000–25,000 per month in ongoing care. The dietary intervention that reduces lifetime risk: ₹899/month. This is the maths nobody shows you.

Transitioning

"My cat won't eat
wet food."

She will. Cats are neophobic — they resist unfamiliar foods. But warm moist food activates appetite signals that dry food at room temperature never does. The protocol below works for 95% of cats.

5-Step Transition Protocol
1
Warm it to 38–40°C.
Near body temperature. This activates the smell compounds that trigger hunting instincts. Cold moist food smells like nothing to a cat.
2
Start beside the dry food, not instead.
Day 1–3: put the moist bowl next to their usual bowl. Let them sniff and choose. Curiosity will do the work.
3
Don't force the schedule.
Cats who are hungry enough will try new food. A healthy cat skipping one meal is fine. Two meals maximum — then offer both options.
4
Tiny amount first. Build up.
Start with 10g moist alongside their regular food. Increase as acceptance builds. Most cats accept fully within 5–7 days.
5
Picky cats: try the broth method.
Add extra water (60ml) to make a broth consistency. The smell carries further. Pour over their current food. Let them eat the soup first. They'll find the food.
